Introduction
In 1986 the chain of rainforest "islands" in north-east New South Wales was granted World Heritage status, bringing to an end decades of logging in this timber-rich area. This protective measure was a result of the recognition that these remnant pockets of rainforest were evidence of the evolutionary history of the continent, its plants and animals, and were scientifically significant. Further north, in south-eastern Queensland and of equal importance are the subtropical rainforests of Lamington National Park - also known as the Gold Coast Hinterland - and the Conondale Ranges.

High rainfall in these parks ensures abundant plant growth as well as countless cool creeks dotted with inviting water holes. Because topography and altitude vary, there is a diversity of habitats supporting a wide range of flora and fauna. Bangalow Palms, called piccabeens just over the border in Queensland, often grow in extensive stands on the lower slopes, taking over from the rainforest trees which are common at high altitudes. Elsewhere, eucalyptus species dominate, interspersed with heaths and some alpine plants in cooler, higher forests such as Gibraltar Ranges on the edge of the New England Tablelands. In Dorrigo National Park, the heavily buttressed yellow carabeen is prominent, along with sassafras, coachwood, red "cedar" and the giant stinging tree. Ferns, mosses and orchids are frequent companions to the forest giants.

Wallabies, grey kangaroos and wallaroos wander over higher parts of some parks and there are many small mammals and marsupials which are mostly nocturnal. Birds flourish in the parks, some - like the lorikeets - rivalling butterflies with their dazzling brilliance of colour.
