| Introduction |
| Situated 726km from Perth is the Esperance region and the
Islands of the Recherche Archipelago. Esperance boasts magnificent coastal scenery and superb beaches and is renowned for fishing and for lush farmlands. Of special mention are the innumerable rocks, shoals, reefs and around one hundred granite islands of the Recherche Archipelago, which are home to large numbers of New Zealand fur seals and sea-lions, as well as many species of birds such as ospreys, straw-necked ibises, white bellied sea eagles. Esperance has more coastline protected by national parks than any other area in Western Australia, with the Cape Arid, Cape Le Grand, Stokes and Fitzgerald River National Parks all in the region. One can photograph a seal as it lumbers down off a rocky shelf, gaze at the underwater world through a glass-bottomed boat, throw in a line for a King George Whiting, lie on a sun-drenched beach, or bushwalk through one of the magnificent National Parks. |
| Cape Le Grand |
| Fifty six kilometres east of the town
of Esperance is Cape Le Grand National Park, an example of nature at its
best with rugged scenery and superb beaches on beautiful bays dotted with
the islands of the archipelago. In the south west corner of the park there is a chain of granite peaks including Mt. Le Grand (345m), Frenchman Peak (262m) and Mississippi Hill (180m). During the Eucene period some 40 million years ago, sea levels were at least 300 metres above their present level and these peaks would have been largely submerged. Sandplains cover much of the park and support a great variety of plant and animal life. More than eighty species of birds have been recorded and many small native mammals live here, including the tiny honey-possum, which feeds on nectar and insects. The Park is named after Le Grand, officer of the French ship L' Esperance which sheltered in the bay of Esperance back in 1792. |

| Among the greatest assets of the
Esperance area are the National Parks, and Cape Arid has nearly 280,000
hectares of wilderness to be enjoyed by those who really want to get away
from it all. Most of the tracks are only suitable for 4WD or bushwalking,
but camping grounds at Poison Creek and at the mouth of the Thomas River
can be reached by car. Peak Charles National Park contains dry woodlands, sandplain heath and salt lake vegetation with two outcrops, Peak Charles (651m) and Peak Eleanora (501m). Peak Charles is popular with climbers and the easiest route to the top has been marked out by posts, the return trip taking 3 hours. Stokes, proclaimed a National Park in 1974, is situated 80km west of the town of Esperance. It is set in peaceful surrounds and the inlet and lakes support a wide variety of birds and animals such as fat-tailed dunnarts and western brush wallabies. A drive along the popular `scenic loop' takes the tourist past some of the best beaches to be found anywhere. The coastal scenery is superb and there are many excellent swimming and fishing spots along the way. Located 88km east of town, Duke of Orleans Bay has to be one of the most beautiful bays in the south-east of Western Australia. Five kilometres out of town is Pink Lake, its colour caused by an algae, Dunalella Salina, which combines with the salt deposits to produce an eerie effect. |
