| Introduction |
| The south-western corner of the state
of Western Australia enjoys a temperate climate, good rainfall and some of
the most spectacular scenery in Australia, in sharp contrast with the dry,
arid land north and east of Perth. Here, the soil is rich, wildflowers are
abundant in spring, and the towering karri, jarrah and tingle tree forests
stretch for more than 150km, covering more than 250,000 hectares along the
unspoilt rugged coastline, from the west of Pemberton to the east of
Walpole, and there are deep rivers and waterfalls in the area. The only natural tuart forest in the world is found at Busselton, located off the Bussel Highway. Trees growing here are between 300 and 400 years old. At the heart of the Jarrah forests are the Darling Ranges. Wildflowers abound during the spring in the Karri forests, and wildlife is prolific. Between Narrogin and Williams is the 22,000 hectare Dryandra State Forest, which shelters many varied marsupials as well as numerous birds and wildflowers. Some of the most spectacular limestone caves in the world are located at Margaret River and Augusta. Mammoth Cave is one of the largest at Margaret River, while Lake Cave is small but situated at the bottom of a huge scenic crater. At Augusta, Jewel Cave has an intricate system of chambers and caverns on varying levels and a lake at the bottom. Spectacular cave formations are found in Yallingup Caves. Two other natural attractions are the Gap and Natural Bridge at Albany. The Gap features a 25 metre sheer drop down to the pounding surf below, and Natural bridge is a huge chunk of granite spanning a gap through which the surf surges, the result of many years of water and wind erosion. Bunbury is the home of the Blue Manna Crab, which may be found in the Lechenault Inlet, and dolphins are found at Koombana Bay. Whales and dolphins are often sighted playing in the waters along the coastline of Albany, particularly in late winter and spring, when Southern Right Whales migrate from the cold Antarctic Ocean to give birth to their young. 18km to the west of Perth is Rottnest Island, where prolific flora and fauna will be found. One of the best known animals is the Quokka, after which the island was named by the explorer Willem de Vlamingh, who mistook the gentle marsupial for a rat. |
