| Introduction |
| The warm tropical waters of
Australia's northern coastline teem with fish. It is estimated that the
Great Barrier Reef supports twice the number of fish species found in the
cooler southern waters. The Angel fish is one of the most colourful inhabitants. It is usually found at around the 15 metres level where the water is dim, probably explaining the fish's need for bright colours. The Butterfly Cod is identifiable by the characteristic zebra-like colour pattern. Its dorsal fin spines are extremely venomous and only Stone fish are more toxic. Another formidable species is the Surgeon fish, so called because of the retractable scalpel at the base of its tail. This blade is razor sharp and up to 6mm long. By swimming alongside another fish and lashing out with its tail, the Surgeon can cause serious wounds. The Puller fish, also known as the Immaculate Damsel, is reasonably common and has a brightly coloured juvenile stage. Clown fish have struck up a strong symbiosis or partnership with anemones and chase off their enemies with amazing ferocity for such small fish. Squirrel fish have large eyes which indicate they are nocturnal. While some fish patrol a strictly defined territory singularly or in pairs, others habitually move in shoals sometimes comprising thousands of individuals. Schooling refers to the way some fishes congregate in a tightly compacted group during moments of danger. This apparently confuses the predator, who cannot focus on any specific victim. Sometimes the school becomes a mob which is effective in driving off a large invader by sheer weight of numbers. A curious feature of many reef fishes is their habit of changing sex as a routine affair. In some cases it is the female which changes to a male, often accompanied by a change of colour pattern. |
