| Introduction |
| The Flinders Ranges form
the most extensive mountain chain in South Australia, stretching some 480
km from Mt. Hopeless in the north to Crystal Brook in the south. They were
named after Matthew Flinders who first sighted the mountains in 1802 while
sailing up the Spencer Gulf, and in 1899 Edward John Eyre used the
mountains as a route into the intriguing interior. The mountain range was once an ancient seabed, pushed up by enormous forces within the earth's crust long ago. The subject of numerous Aboriginal Dreamtime legends, many parts of the Flinders Rangers contain sacred ceremonial grounds and superb rock carvings and paintings, some known to be 12,000 years old. The climate ranges from quite temperate in the south through to extremely arid in the north. Rain can fall at any time of the year and, although infrequent, is often heavy, causing some creeks to flood. One will find everything here, from rugged gorges to rolling deserts, from rough and ready bush pubs to top class hotels. One can drive, fly or bushwalk, or try camel trekking for a unique way of exploring the incredibly varied countryside, which has a majestic beauty rich in plants and wildlife. |

| Flinders Ranges |
| The mountain chain of the
Flinders Ranges is the most extensive in the state and stretches some 480
km from Mt. Hopeless in the north to Crystal Brook in the south. The ranges contain some of the most spectacular and varied scenery in Australia, from rugged gorges and towering peaks to rolling plains and tranquil waterholes, as well as reminders of the country's pastoral and mining heritage. The whole area is rich in plants and wildlife, and many parts of the Flinders Ranges contain sacred Aboriginal ceremonial grounds and superb rock carvings, some known to be 12,000 years old. Wilpena Pound is one of the most prominent features of the ranges. Massive peaks form a beautiful backdrop to a natural basin of pre-Cambrian sedimentary sandstone. The Pound is tremendous walking country but also has mountain climbing trails which present more of a challenge. In the western end of Brachina Gorge there are limestone rocks containing marine fossils of early forms of life, dating back 600 million years. Sillers Lookout at Arkaroola provides a panoramic view of the Northern Flinders Ranges. |
| Arkaroola |
| Arkaroola, on the northern
fringe of the Gammon Ranges National Park, is a 60,665 ha property
established privately as a sanctuary since 1968. It is also a controlled
tourist resort and it is the tourist headquarters of the Northern
Flinders. Abundant rainfall along with strict conservation measures have enabled a wonderful regeneration of trees and shrubs, and native wildlife is now prolific. Euros, red and grey kangaroos, brush-tailed wallabies and the rare yellow-footed rock wallabies now thrive in the area. Arkaroola is also home to more than 160 species of native birds. The whole area is of immense beauty and many days can be spent exploring the surrounding countryside which includes fascinating geological formations within the towering granite peaks and quartzite ridges, picturesque gorges, vast plains and salt lakes. An Aboriginal legend claims that the Arkaroo serpent came from the ranges to lake Frome, where he drank the lake dry. On its return trip, he dug Arkaroola Gorge with its body, and the waterholes in the area were the places where the serpent stopped to rest. Amazing ripples made by the waters of an ancient sea can be seen on the giant cliff face at Bararranna Gorge. Some of the nearby attractions are the Nooldoonooldoona Waterhole, the Pinnacles and the radio-active Paralana Hot Springs, which originate deep within the earth's surface and which are believed to be the last remaining evidence of volcanic activity in Australia. The area is a proclaimed historic reserve and Aboriginal ceremonial site. |
| Mt. Remarkable National Park |
| The Mt Remarkable National
Park can be accessed from Melrose or from Wilmington. In one of its most beautiful sections is Alligator Gorge with its unusual rock formations. From there, if one follows the creek upstream, the gorge leads to an area known as The Terraces, where large platforms have been worn in to the hard quartzite by the action of water over millions of years. Within the rock one can clearly see ripple marks reminiscent of a sandy beach shore. Another feature is Mambray Creek, which follows a winding course to the Spencer Gulf and is overhung by a canopy of river gums. |
