Introduction
The sheer breathtaking beauty and diversity of flora in this country has fascinated countless people since the arrival of the earliest explorers.

Because of Australia's remoteness from other great land masses, the plants have been able to evolve without external threats to survival or changes caused by hybridisation with exotic species. Thus, many wildflowers are unique to Australia.

In addition to this singularity, the variety of Australian wildflowers is enormous because the range of climates and soils has encouraged myriad adaptations. For example, most of Australia's vast land mass is remarkably dry so many Australian plants are characterised by their ability to cope with extreme aridity and harsh temperatures.

Many desert species lie dormant in blazing heat until rain falls whereupon they spring into life and in the space of a few weeks grow to maturity, flower, set seed and wither. An immense area of desert flowers in bloom is an arresting sight.

Other soils and climates such as those in alpine areas, tropical rainforest, temperate grasslands and coastal regions have produced numberless variations of flower and leaf ranging from the vibrant wattle, Australia's floral emblem, to the fragile, ephemeral ground orchid. Whatever the environment, however inhospitable, there is likely to be a wildflower adapted to it.

Initially, Australia's wildflowers were regarded as botanical curiosities because they were so different from the blooms familiar to the early settlers who came primarily from Europe.

Now, while their botanic distinctiveness still arouses keen interest, they are widely admired for their intrinsic beauty.
