| Introduction |
| There are parts of the world so
sublime one would think nature made a special and artistic statement of
its awesome creativity. Australia is blessed with many such places. Some
are still relatively unknown and others have achieved international
recognition so profound that they have been awarded World Heritage
listing, which has an effect on their popularity similar to what the
Oscars do to film. Fraser Island has existed within more or less its present water line for a mere 6000 years since the polar caps finished receding from the last Ice Age. The sands that make up the island and other parts of the Great Sandy Region were swept northward from New South Wales and deposited around the rocks and headlands of the Queensland coast. The ocean currents pushed the sand for 6000 million years while the winds played with its shape, heaping up great dunes. As the ocean levels changed and exposed more sand so it would be added by the wind to the dunes it had already created. Plants took hold, stabilising the dunes, their spent tissue combining with the minerals and water to support yet more complex and larger communities of vegetation. The flora evolved so keenly in this new environment that, as well as being incredibly varied, it affords us the exquisite absurdity of lush rainforest growing in sand - impossible anywhere else. Known as Kgarri by the Butchulla people, the island became their base for more than 5000 years prior to the arrival of Europeans. Throughout the region, over 400 sites of listed archeological significance bear testimony to the natural bounty that sustained them and their culture. Using bark canoes, spears and traps, the sea was forever generous to the Aboriginal people, supplying them with fish, dugong, turtle, crabs and shellfish. The island also provided unlimited supplies of pure water. The aboriginal population, which numbered around 2000 in the 1850s, collided tragically with the ignorance, misunderstanding and superior technology of colonizing Europeans, which resulted in the decimation of their numbers and destruction of their culture. Only recently are tentative steps being taken to repair the connections between the Aboriginal people and the island. |
