| Introduction |
| Mount Gambier is an
extinct volcano and it is located mid-way between Adelaide and Melbourne,
just within the border of South Australia and 27 km from the sea.
Magnificent lakes now exist in the crater of Mount Gambier. The peaks of Mount Gambier and the neighbouring Mount Schank were sighted and named in 1800 by Lieutenant James Grant, in command of the brig H.M.S. "Lady Nelson" on a survey voyage around the coast of Australia. Mount Gambier attracts many visitors who have the opportunity to see the Blue Lake, the colour of which changes mysteriously in the summer months to an intensity of blue that defies description; the startling beauty of the nearby Tantanoola and Princess Margaret Rose Caves; the fascinating sink-holes which attract scuba divers from all over Australia, and the lush wine-growing district of Coonawarra. Not far away is the rugged coastline of Port MacDonnell and cape Northumberland and the quiet serenity of the Glenelg River at Nelson where excellent fishing abounds. |
| The Crater Lakes |
| The Lakes formed in the
crater of the extinct volcano that is Mount Gambier are the Blue Lake,
Valley Lake, Browne's Lake, and Leg of Mutton Lake, now nearly dry. The
most famous is the Blue Lake, with its annual change of colour each
November to a depth of blue that no photograph can convey. The Blue Lake and, to a lesser extent, the other lakes, are believed to be mere storage points for waters on their way to the sea. The natural limestone basin that includes the lakes drains a wide area of country stretching as far as the Grampians, thus the water level, although rising and falling very slowly, varies little from year to year. Many theories for the mysterious change of colour in the Blue Lake have been put forward, but so far no completely satisfactory explanation has been found. The lake retains its brilliant blue for two to three months, fading as the summer progresses to its blue-grey colour in late April. To view the phenomenon, a scenic drive has been constructed around the Blue Lake's 4.83 km rim, with lookouts provided at various vantage points from which one can see the 84 m cliffs and the surface of the lake, approximately 18 m above sea level. Soundings revealed that its average depth is approximately 73 metres, although in one area called the "Bung Hole" the floor of the lake dips to around 205 metres. The Lake is useful, as well as ornamental, being a natural reservoir from which the city of Mount Gambier draws its water supply. A pumping station has been built in the side of the cliff, drawing as many as 20 million litres a day during the hot weather, yet this quantity does not visibly affect the water level. |
| Environs |
| The Glenelg River, which
rises in the Grampians in Western Victoria, enters the sea at Nelson, a
small fishing village just inside the Victorian border. Approximately 6 km
upstream is Donovan's Landing, where the river becomes part of South
Australia. The round trip to the coast and on to Nelson is a popular day trip from Mount Gambier, with 14 km of the journey within sight of the sea. Three kilometres west of Port MacDonnell, the Cape Northumberland Lighthouse, built on the most southerly point of South Australia, guards the Southern Ocean. |
