Introduction
The majority of Australian bush animals are nocturnal, foraging by night and sleeping by day. The carnivorous marsupials, the rarely sighted native cats, are included in this group.

The largest of these is the Brown Tiger Cat, liberally sprinkled with white spots on the tail as well as the body. Perhaps best known of the carnivores is the Tasmanian Devil, a sturdy marsupial that sleeps by day in well-hidden dens of remote rocky country. Our shy and gentle possums are all nocturnal, the Ringtail possum most active during the first half of the night, its presence often first detected by its high-pitched twittering call.

The common Brushtail Possum is the most familiar, frequently cohabiting with humans. The tiny Pygmy Possum is able to sit in the bowl of a teaspoon to lick honey, a favourite food in captivity.

The various owls and frogmouths of Australia are the best-known nocturnal birds. The Masked Owl ranges extensively except in more arid areas and is a large bird quite capable of killing young rabbits and reptiles.

Tawny Frogmouths are common throughout Australia and, although they do not retire to a nest or hollow during the day, they are seldom seen because of their superb camouflage. Both owls and frogmouths have exceptionally keen hearing and directional sound locating ability, which allows them to strike accurately at prey in darkness.

The Grey-headed Fruit Bat or Flying Fox is one of the world's largest bats with a wingspan reaching four feet. The Sugar Glider uses a range of calls, including a shrill yapping that warns others of danger.

The Common Wombat is a large burrowing marsupial that lives in the forest-covered, often mountainous areas of south-eastern Australia. It travels up to three kilometres during three to eight hours of grazing each night. The Southern Hairynosed Wombat appears to be very slow but can run as fast as 40km per hour over short distances.

The Green Tree Frog is a large smooth-skinned frog reaching up to 100mm in length. It is widespread even in the drier areas of the continent, where it is found around places like water tanks.

The male Northern Brown Bandicoot has a gland behind the ear, used for marking the ground and vegetation during aggressive encounters. It prefers low ground cover.

Nocturnal animals are not often seen by the public as they forage when we sleep.
Common Wombat
The Common Wombats are large, burrowing, herbivorous marsupials. They live in the forest and heath-covered, often mountainous, areas of south-eastern Australia and, in greater numbers, in Tasmania.

Their complex underground burrows have many passages and usually a group of 6 to 10 animals inhabit them.

They are nocturnal, and they travel up to three kilometres during the three to eight hours of grazing each night, feeding on grasses and plant roots which they dig up with their powerful claws.

The female raises one offspring in her pouch at a time. The young animal will stay there for about six months.

The Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat appears to be very slow, but can run as fast as 40 km per hour over short distances.
