| Introduction |
| Most famous of all open country
animals is the Dingo, Australia's native dog, which is common all over
Australia in sparsely populated areas. It is thought to have been
introduced by Aborigines. The oldest fossil to have been reliably dated is
a skeleton estimated to be around 3,000 years old. The Dingo favours the
edges of forests where these meet heathlands or grasslands. These areas
are also the habitat of the wombat, wallaby, kangaroo and rabbits - all of
which are eaten by the Dingo. Mating occurs from autumn to early winter
and litters of 3-4 pups are born after a gestation period of 9 weeks. Next to the Ostrich, the flightless Emu is the world's largest bird and can run at high speeds. The female lays up to 20 green eggs in a nest on the ground and then leaves, the male incubating them and looking after the chicks for up to 18 months. The Bush Stone Curlew is a long-legged bird with an eerie wailing call, mostly heard at night when the bird is active. Instead of laying eggs in a nest and sitting on them the Mallee Fowl uses an underground incubation chamber. The male excavates a hole and fills it with vegetation. On top he builds a mound of sand and the female lays her eggs in the mound. Heat from the sun and the rotting vegetation incubates the eggs. The Brush Turkey is an active bird, spending most of its time scratching among fallen trees and debris for insects and other small creatures. It roosts high in trees during the heat of the day and if alarmed runs into the undergrowth with great rapidity. This bird also lays eggs in a mound and temperature is controlled by the male, who continually rakes up fresh material, turning over and mixing the upper part of the mound. The Numbat feeds by means of a long, mobile, sticky tongue that is inserted into the galleries of termite nests, exposing the shallow, unfortified runways just below the surface of the ground. Insects that adhere to the tongue are retained in the mouth as the tongue is flicked in and out, and are swallowed whole. The Numbat has 50-52 teeth, but these are poorly developed and are not used for eating. The Bustard or Plains Turkey is a large bird of up to 9kg in weight. It is a stately individual and walks with its head held high and its bill raised. The rather long, heavy legs have small feet without a hind toe. Some of the larger animals have benefited from the clearing of forest and woodland but increased grazing pressure and introduced stock has threatened the survival of many of the smaller species. |
