| Introduction |
| Australia is home to an estimated 758
species of birds, including regular breeding and non-breeding visitors,
with so many beautiful and interesting varieties that it is impossible to
mention more than a few here. Some birds are found nowhere else in the world, including the unique Lyrebird of the south-eastern rainforests. This shy bird is renowned for its astonishing prowess as a mimic with an incredible repertoire of calls. Belonging to the Kingfisher family, the Kookaburra is famous for its loud laughing call. This interesting bird often lives for 20 years or more, forms pairs for life and lives in clans comprising several generations. The White-tailed Kingfisher is a spring and summer visitor from New Guinea to north-east Queensland. The familiar cry of the magpie is generally heard at dawn and dusk. Although magpies can become tame they will not hesitate to swoop down viciously on anyone they feel is a threat to the nest. The Red Wattlebird is the largest honeyeater in mainland Australia. It is a noisy, aggressive bird that takes flying insects in the air or hops on the ground after food. The pigeon family is one of the main orders of birds and includes the now extinct Dodo. The Spinifex Pigeon was named by Gould from a specimen collected by the explorer Frank Gregory. These birds frequent arid flat open areas. Preferring the open forest near water is the dainty Peaceful Dove, who reacts aggressively to other birds during the breeding season. Also living near water is the Owl-faced Double-barred Finch, which drinks by sucking. Australia's flightless birds are large specimens. The Tasmanian Native Hen is almost twice the size of its mainland relative, the Black-tailed Native Hen, and is often seen in open grassy areas along creeks and swamps. The Cassowary is confined to two populations in the rainforests of north-east Queensland. It tends to be solitary and no more than six birds have been seen together. Two representatives of insect-eating songbirds are the Golden Whistler and Rufous Fantail. The Golden Whistler only forms pairs during the breeding season. In spring the males call out loudly, rocking with a characteristic see-saw posture. The Rufous Fantail lives in the gullies of northern, eastern and southern fringes of the continent. A distinctive little bird, it takes its name from the lovely, fanned, flame-like tail. The Pheasant Coucal is a member of the cuckoo family of which there are fourteen species in Australia. The Pitta is a brightly coloured dweller of tropical and semi-tropical rainforest. The Olive-backed Oriole is widespread and ranges from southern New Guinea and adjacent islands to northern and eastern Australia. Trapping for export and the introduction of exotic pests and feral animals have placed many of Australia's beautiful birds in jeopardy. It is hoped that continued research by both professional and non-professional bodies will help to preserve some of the more threatened species. |
