| Introduction |
| Parrots, numbering 332 species
worldwide, are well represented in Australia with 55 varieties of these
often brightly coloured and social birds found here. The parrots body
structure, with its short hooked bill, prominent fleshy nostrils and two
toes forward, two toes back, renders it recognisable to even the casual
birdwatcher. The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is one of the most familiar parrots. It has a spectacular yellow crest which is raised when alarmed or angry. The Major Mitchell Cockatoo was named after the explorer who first described it in 1838 and is a wary bird, congregating in pairs or small flocks. The male Gang Gang Cockatoo has bright feathers, while the female's crest remains grey. The pink and grey feathers of the Galah make an impressive sight when the birds are seen in large, noisy flocks, wheeling about over wheat fields looking for seeds or grain. Corellas also congregate in large flocks, sometimes numbering 60-70,000, and can give the impression of a tree in full bloom when roosting. The smaller Budgerigars group in huge flocks in inland Australia, particularly after rain, while Cockatiels migrate north in Autumn and return south in the Spring. The flamboyant Rainbow Lorikeet has become a tourist attraction in Queensland with thousands descending to feed at the honey trays provided. Further examples of the range of colourful plumage displayed by parrots can be seen on the Eastern Rosella, Crimson Rosella and the King Parrot. Rosellas are only found in Australia and in the early days of European settlement were called Rosehill Parrots, because they were discovered at Rosehill in New South Wales. The cheeky extrovert behaviour of parrots has led to their popularity as cage birds and, fruit growers aside, most people look upon them with fondness. |
