| Introduction |
| The warm dry conditions over a large
part of Australia provide suitable habitat for several hundred species of
reptiles. Arguably the most well-known and readily identifiable of these
is the Estuarine or Saltwater Crocodile. Inhabiting the northern parts of
the continent, from Broome in the west to Rockhampton on the east coast,
it is dangerous to man. The adult crocodiles can grow to five metres in
length and ambush their prey, eating any large animal they can overpower.
The smaller ones subsist on fish, frogs and small mammals. The other
crocodile native to Australia is the Johnston Freshwater variety, which
has a narrow snout distinguishing it from its saltwater cousin. Although
considered harmless, the sharp teeth are adapted for feeding on fish and
could inflict a nasty wound. Lizards are the most widespread and diverse of Australia's reptiles. Most are coloured for camouflage, although some are strikingly marked as a deterrent to predators. The Thorny Devil, which is covered in an array of spiky outgrowths and bright colours, is a good example of this protective behaviour. The majority of lizards are carnivorous, hunting for prey during daylight, with a range of feeding habits as diverse as their shapes and sizes, eating insects, worms, snails, fish, other reptiles, crustaceans, birds and small mammals. The dragon species contains some of the most conspicuous forms, the largest being the Eastern Water Dragon. But the family also includes the distinguished Frilled Lizard, Bearded Dragons and a diverse array of brightly marked, fast moving relatives. A number of dragons rise up onto their hind limbs when pursued and run off bipedally to a safe hole or tree. Australia contains two-thirds of the world's monitor lizards. Known in this country as goannas, the Perentie is the largest, reaching a maximum length of 2 1/2 metres, while the Short-tailed Monitor is only 20cm when fully grown. The goannas have adapted to most of the continent; among them the Gould's Goanna in the dry inland, the Lace Monitor in the more temperate regions and the water monitors along the rivers and streams. One of the larger members of the skink family is the Blue-tongue Lizard, representing an extremely successful group of lizards, some of which are capable of producing live young rather than laying eggs, although this is the exception rather than the rule. Snakes, although closely related to lizards, do not possess limbs, movable eyelids or visible ear openings. However they can distend their Iower jaw on an elasticised ligament to swallow prey larger than their own head. Many snakes are dangerous to humans including Tiger Snakes, Taipans and Death Adders which are all highly poisonous. Pythons and Carpet Snakes subdue their prey by constriction before swallowing it whole. The aquatic turtles and most land-based tortoises represent the other reptile family found in Australia. Examples of these ancient members can be found in lakes, streams and on shorelines across the continent. While the turtles have webbed feet, the sea turtles limbs have evolved into flippers for a predominantly marine lifestyle. Apart from the poisonous snakes and predatory crocodile, reptiles by and large exist in harmony with humans, some species managing to exploit the urban environment. |
