| Introduction |
| The deep sea harbours some of our most
interesting creatures including the awesome shark, the playful dolphin and
the majestic whale. For many years people have lived in fear of the shark, fuelled by the media and movies such as "Jaws". This view is unfortunate, as reports of the shark as a mindless man-eater have been grossly exaggerated. The Great White Shark is indeed a ferocious carnivore that will attack large animals as will the Tiger Shark, but they are only two of hundreds of different types of shark. Many are harmless species, such as the Angel Shark and the Whale Shark, which is a gentle individual who dines almost exclusively on tiny marine organisms. The Grey Nurse prefers prey such as bony fishes, large crustaceans and small sharks. It often swims with its mouth open and because of its rather ferocious appearance has been hunted almost to the point of extinction. It is now a protected species in Australia. Gentle giant of the deep is the Humpback Whale, which is found in all the great oceans of the world. The breaching of a Humpback is a magnificent sight as forty-five tons of power soar out of the water in a towering leap. It is a stocky mammal ranging from 12 to 16 metres with a large, moderately flat head. The bold and aggressive Killer Whale fears few living things and is a superb hunter, the movement of a hunting pack appearing so co-ordinated that success is almost assured. Blue Whales are the largest animals on earth. They can reach 33 metres and 150 tonnes and have a heart the size of a small car. Belonging to the same family group as the whales is the lovable Dolphin, of which thirteen species frequent our waters. Of these the Bottlenose Dolphin is the best known, starring in many of our oceanariums because of its remarkable ability to learn routines in captivity. At Monkey Mia in the Shark Bay region of Western Australia, Bottlenose Dolphins have been coming to the shallows to accept fish and interact with humans for the past 25 years entirely of their own free will. Nowhere else in the world have wild dolphins been known to seek human contact for so many years. A much smaller inhabitant of the ocean is the Leafy Sea Dragon, a spectacularly camouflaged fish belonging to the same family as sea-horses. Although the female of the species produces eggs, the male carries and incubates them until they hatch. Although unseen by the majority of people, the deep water surrounding Australia contains many species of aquatic life which are of great ecological and economic value. |
