| Introduction |
| One of the driest continents,
Australia has a very small proportion of habitat suitable for water fowl,
the famous sandy beaches being mostly poor bird environments. However
there are estuaries, mudflats, mangrove swamps, lakes and off-shore
islands in sufficient quantities to support a surprising number of local
and migratory species. Among the largest of our waterfowl is the distinguished black and white pelican. Pelicans breed in vast colonies when the inland lakes fill and disperse coastward when the lakes dry out. The Black Swan favours stretches of permanent water, where its long neck reaches down to feed on the bottom. Cape Barren Geese breed on the islands off southern Australia before returning to the mainland to graze on grasses and herbage. Sharing a similar range is the Black-faced Cormorant, which nests on bare rock just above high water. The Sacred Ibis, related to the bird of Egyptian antiquity, has been recorded in flocks of 10,000 in its favoured habitat of swamps, streams and lakes. The tropical north is the home of the Magpie Goose which frequents the swamps and marshy regions of rivers and lagoons in huge flocks. Another occupant of the north is the stately Jabiru Stork, which quietly paces though the shallows probing for frogs, fish and crustaceans. Often seen stalking alone is the Egret, ready to strike out at prey with its long bill. Equally as recognisable in its own way is the Jacana. This bird has long toes that allow it to walk over floating vegetation without sinking. By sweeping its curved upswept bill through the water, the Red-necked Avocet seeks out aquatic insects, crustaceans and plant matter. The distinctive cry of the Spur-winged Plover is a familiar sound in most wetlands. It has a characteristic stalk with shoulders hunched. The Whistling Duck has striking wing-feathers that are curled up at the end. It prefers to seek out seed, legumes and vegetable material on the shoreline. One of the most widespread and familiar of Australia's ducks is the Pacific Black Duck. Found wherever there is water, it soon becomes tame in city parks and gardens. The Maned or Wood Duck regularly perches in trees. The male has a brown head and the female is marked by white stripes through the eye. An unforgettable sight off the northern coastlines and on the islands of the Great Barrier Reef is a mass of wheeling and screaming Sooty Terns returning to breed. While the birds that frequent Australia's coastline have a plentiful water supply, the birds living further inland have had to adapt their feeding and breeding behaviour to our sporadic rainfall patterns. |
