| Introduction |
| Western Australian wildflowers exhibit
a spectacular and often bizarre range of colours and forms. Various circumstances are responsible for Western Australia's variety of wildflowers. First, the State's isolation - with oceans lapping three sides and desert on the other side - has ensured the continuing purity of most of the flora. Also, the magnificent south-west region - the most ancient part of this very old continent - has never been submerged, suffered drought or similar disasters experienced by other Australian States. With their habitat so protected, many flowers remained in primitive form, while others evolved slowly without being affected by drastic changes. One of the earliest European explorers of Australia's harsh western coastline was the famous English mariner and adventurer William Dampier. During the years 1688-1699 while charting and exploring the coast, his keen eye observed the wildflowers and he had the distinction of being the first to present them to the world. There are over 6000 species of Western Australian wildflowers, many with extraordinary growth forms and colour combinations. One of their most incredible features is the brilliance and range of colour found within the same genus. For example, Lechenaultias may be shades of red, orange, green, yellow, blue, mauve or white; while the bizarre colour combinations in Kangaroo Paws, some with red stem topped by green flower, seem quite unreal to eyes accustomed to more conventional flowers. The display of wildflowers is generous all through the year, but it is usually in late winter, springtime and early summer that the greatest number of plants are in bloom. In the far north, on the other hand, flowerings are not dependent on the four seasons as in the south, but on the hot wet season and the cooler dry season. The vast arid and semi-arid regions between the wondrous south-west and the far north can be harsh and forbidding to humans and beasts, but plant life here is a miracle of adaptation. Drought in this desert area is a recurring feature but, given rains, the land blossoms and blooms with glowing colours. Each region of this vast State has its own unique and beautiful wildflowers. It is possible to present here only a fraction of the total picture and give an overview of the various wildflowers in different areas. With today's appreciation of these magnificent natives and concern at many levels for the environment, their survival is no longer precarious. The National Parks and Wildflower Reserves of Western Australia are safe havens for the State's rare and exquisite plants. To appreciate the distribution of the many wildflowers in Western Australia, it is suggested that reference be made to the map on the last page which indicates the various regions where the different plants flourish. |
| Heathlands |
| The heathlands of Western Australia
contain some of Australia's most prolific wildflower areas. They thrive
only within a fairly defined range of altitude (neither lowlands nor
highlands) and rainfall. The soil is a dominant influence on heathland growth, and from area to area the vegetation follows the soil type rather than the climate; so areas of heathland plants are scattered fairly widely among regions considered to be perhaps chiefly open forest, savannah-mallee or even desert. Sand heaths also occur on shallow sandy clay when conditions are appropriate. King's Park expresses Perth's pride and joy in its floral treasures. Here, only a stone's throw from the city centre, are 400 hectares of open parklands with a wonderful profusion of wildflowers in tracts of virgin bushland. Kangaroo Paws are among the most outstanding and abundant of the State's wildflowers. These plants, which are endemic here, have extraordinary, striking flowers in red, orange, yellow, green and black, intensified by a dense covering of velvety hairs. Most famous is the red and green flower which is the State's floral emblem. There are many different Grevilleas in the heathlands. Their distinctive, glossy, spider-like flowers add brilliance to the bush, while the 20 different Lechenaultias - particularly the Blue Leschenaultia - are some of the best-known heathland flowers. One of the finest of all flowering trees is the Christmas tree which grows to a height of nine metres. This remarkable tree belongs to the mistletoe family and requires roots of another tree or plant on which to attach its own roots. Its brilliant orange tubular flowers bloom in a blaze of incandescent glory over Christmas. There are many other magnificent flowers (including Banksias and Hakeas), which add beauty and colour to the heathlands all through the year. |
| Open Forest |
| The open forests of Western Australia
are in the south-west corner of the State, and although the region is
relatively small, it is regarded as the richest wildflower area on the
Continent. Characteristics of open forests are the moderately dense to
open vegetation with good understorey, and it is this understorey that
supports the most beautiful and varied flowers. Apart from the Stirling Range and the Barrens further east, the region consists mainly of a gently undulating plateau with good rainfall. The wettest parts are home to the great forests of Jarrah and Karri, both majestic trees of immense proportions. The range of flowering trees, shrubs and smaller plants in the south-west is enormous. Eucalypts are dominant throughout many areas of Western Australia, but those with very brightly coloured flowers - red, pink, yellow, etc. - are more common here than elsewhere. Acacias are plentiful throughout all Australian States and in the south-west of Western Australia there are over one hundred species. Grevilleas and Bottlebrushes thrive here as do the Banksias with their brilliant "candles". The Giant Banksia, with large yellow and orange "candles", grows as an understorey beneath tall Eucalypts in the Jarrah and Karri forests. Then again, beneath all these are drifts of smaller flowers and ground covers, while many different climbers, Tassel Flowers and Trigger Plants all add to the brilliance of colour. Western Australians are both protective and proud of their "Garden of Eden". Each year, visitors flock in their thousands to marvel at the ever-changing kaleidoscope in this south-western area which has made the State world famous with botanists, artists, bush lovers, conservationists and all who appreciate unparalleled natural beauty. |
