| Introduction |
| Western Australian wildflowers exhibit
a spectacular and often bizarre range of colours and forms. Various circumstances are responsible for Western Australia's variety of wildflowers. First, the State's isolation - with oceans lapping three sides and desert on the other side - has ensured the continuing purity of most of the flora. Also, the magnificent south-west region - the most ancient part of this very old continent - has never been submerged, suffered drought or similar disasters experienced by other Australian States. With their habitat so protected, many flowers remained in primitive form, while others evolved slowly without being affected by drastic changes. One of the earliest European explorers of Australia's harsh western coastline was the famous English mariner and adventurer William Dampier. During the years 1688-1699 while charting and exploring the coast, his keen eye observed the wildflowers and he had the distinction of being the first to present them to the world. There are over 6000 species of Western Australian wildflowers, many with extraordinary growth forms and colour combinations. One of their most incredible features is the brilliance and range of colour found within the same genus. For example, Lechenaultias may be shades of red, orange, green, yellow, blue, mauve or white; while the bizarre colour combinations in Kangaroo Paws, some with red stem topped by green flower, seem quite unreal to eyes accustomed to more conventional flowers. The display of wildflowers is generous all through the year, but it is usually in late winter, springtime and early summer that the greatest number of plants are in bloom. In the far north, on the other hand, flowerings are not dependent on the four seasons as in the south, but on the hot wet season and the cooler dry season. The vast arid and semi-arid regions between the wondrous south-west and the far north can be harsh and forbidding to humans and beasts, but plant life here is a miracle of adaptation. Drought in this desert area is a recurring feature but, given rains, the land blossoms and blooms with glowing colours. Each region of this vast State has its own unique and beautiful wildflowers. It is possible to present here only a fraction of the total picture and give an overview of the various wildflowers in different areas. With today's appreciation of these magnificent natives and concern at many levels for the environment, their survival is no longer precarious. The National Parks and Wildflower Reserves of Western Australia are safe havens for the State's rare and exquisite plants. To appreciate the distribution of the many wildflowers in Western Australia, it is suggested that reference be made to the map on the last page which indicates the various regions where the different plants flourish. |
