| Introduction |
| Wilson's Promontory National Park, or
The Prom, as it is affectionately known, is one of Australia's most
popular national parks. Located 230 km south-east of Melbourne, Wilson's Promontory is the southern-most tip of mainland Australia. It is principally composed of granite which has been lifted and weathered into imposing mountains, quaintly shaped offshore islands and many large rounded boulders called tors. Because the granite cooled slowly, large crystals and other stones (xenoliths) became embedded in these boulders, giving them the appearance of "plum puddings". Over the aeons The Prom has been separated from, and re-joined to, the mainland several times. At one time it was joined to Tasmania by a land bridge but a rise in sea level about 15,000 years ago severed this link. For centuries Aborigines visited the area to feast on shellfish and in the 1800s sealers and whalers hunted their prey here. In 1905, prompted by concern for the preservation of the Prom's irreplaceable natural beauty, the region was declared a national park. Currently, it is nearly 49,000 hectares in area and includes five reserves, which protect the coastline and inlet areas and their wildlife communities: Wilson's Promontory Marine Reserve, Wilson's Promontory Marine Park, Shallow Inlet, Corner Inlet, and Nooramunga Marine and Coastal Parks. The highest level of protection is given to the Marine Reserve, which covers the coastal area, including the waters up to 300m out from the low-tide mark, and the islands between Norman bay and Refuge Cove. The water here is clear, and the colourful underwater creatures and scenery are impressive. In common with many other outstanding national parks, Wilson's Promontory supports a wide range of habitats and each in turn has a specific set of plant and animal relationships. Mountain forest, swamps, heathland, coast and warm temperate rainforest are home to well-known animals such as kangaroos, wallabies, wombats and koalas. The mudflats are vital breeding grounds for fish and feeding and roosting grounds for migratory waders. Some islands and coastal areas are home to Asian Hog Deer, which are almost extinct in Asia. Other less noticeable but just as interesting inhabitants include skinks, snakes, antechinus, yabbies and native rodents, as well as countless insects. Birds are a special part of The Prom's charm, and the richest variety is to be found in the three Coastal and Marine Parks. Waders such as the Short-tailed Sandpiper and the Red-necked Stint are found here in their thousands when they fly south for the northern winter from their breeding places in arctic Siberia. The best time to see these is between September and April, some displaying their breeding plumage around March. The rare Ground Parrot, the endangered Orange-bellied Parrot, and the Cape Barren Goose (which is rare in Victoria) are also found here. Emus pace the grasslands at the entrance to the park, shoals of different sea birds populate the shores, black swans, egrets and herons grace the rivers, while flocks of tiny birds such as wrens, pardalotes, thornbills and finches dart in and out of bushes. Raucous but endearing rainbow lorikeets compete with equally noisy wattle birds for the abundant supplies of nectar found in the stands of gnarled banksia trees. Most memorable are the crimson rosellas which are tame enough to be hand-fed. Similarly, The Prom is richly endowed with flora, over 700 species having been recorded. Banksias, eucalypts, lush tree ferns, lily-pilly, she-oaks and tea-tree contribute to the upper canopy of plants while at lower levels smaller shrubs such as heath, hakea, bottlebrush, correa and bush pea shelter delicate ground orchids and lilies. Of particular interest is the graceful Austral grass-tree which takes several decades to grow merely a metre in height. Some specimens are over 3 metres and are therefore very old. Mangroves are more familiar as sub-tropical plants, but at Wilson's Promontory they thrive in relatively cooler conditions, though their growth is stunted. They are the southernmost mangroves in the world. The Prom is also home to the great Southern or myrtle beech (Nothofagus cunninghamii). A close relative of the Southern beech, the Antarctic beech (Nothofagus moorei), was part of the forest that covered some of the vast land mass known as Gondwana (when Australia, New Guinea, New Zealand, South America, India, Tibet, Iran, Turkey, Arabia, Africa, Madagascar, a fragment of Southeast Asia and Antarctica were joined). Today, living specimens of the Southern beech can also be found in the Falkland Islands, in New Zealand, New Caledonia and in the mountains of New Guinea. Many special features have ensured The Prom's preservation as a park - amongst them the fact that it boasts some of Victoria's best beaches. This, together with the plentiful and sociable wildlife and the tranquillity and rugged grandeur of its wilderness and coastline, have made it an enduring place in the hearts of countless visitors. |
